Abstract. The article examines the artistic features of the formation of the mythopoetic image of the world in A. P. Chekhov’s works «From Siberia» and «Sakhalin Island». Geographical space, the natural environment and human relations with them are studied on the basis of comparative-typological and semantic analysis. The symbolic content of the images of the road, the taiga, the river, the island and the border is revealed, along with their role in expressing the author’s worldview. As a result of the study, open and bounded models of geographical space are identified in the travel writings and their mythopoetic features are scientifically substantiated. The interrelation of realistic depiction and symbolic generalisation is also elucidated. The results obtained contribute to a deeper understanding of the poetic distinctiveness of Chekhov’s travel prose and to broadening the scholarly potential of mythopoetic analysis.
